Improving Mental Health through Physical Activity

In this MyST training session we will be looking at understanding the biology behind physical and emotional regulation and the benefits of a variety of physical activities on mental health We will be thinking about how children and young people can be supported to develop their ability to regulate, amongst other skills, through a variety of physical activities including sports, individual exercise, and hobbies etc. We will explore some practical, physical, strategies that can help young people with regulation and think together about how as adults we can support them with this along the way, including thinking about the “intense exercise” aspect of DBT TIPP Skills.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the biology behind physical and emotional regulation.
  • Discuss the benefits of physical activity for children and young people’s mental health including how this can help with trauma.
  • Explore how different types of physical activity can develop young people’s ability to regulate and build other skills.

Practice utilising different types of physical activities that can be taken away as helpful strategies for supporting children and young people.
